Kitchen Painting Done to a Finish Standard

Painting your kitchen is one of the highest-return improvements you can make without gutting the room. Done right, fresh paint on cabinets and walls can completely reframe the space. Done badly, it peels within a season and costs more to fix than if you'd hired a contractor from the start. Strictly Builders Inc handles kitchen painting as part of full kitchen remodeling scopes and as a standalone service. Ryan Alson has spent three years in the trade finishing kitchens across the region, and the prep work his crew puts in before a brush touches the surface is what separates a durable result from a temporary one. Call for a free estimate.

The scope of a kitchen painting job varies more than most homeowners expect. Cabinet painting alone involves degreasing, sanding, priming with a bonding primer, and applying a finish coat that can handle heat, humidity, and daily contact. Walls behind the range and sink get a semi-gloss or satin for the same reason. Trim and crown molding typically require a harder enamel. The condition of the existing surface matters considerably. Cabinets with heavy grease buildup, previous latex paint over oil-based primer, or laminate faces all demand different preparation. We'll tell you exactly what the surface requires before any work begins. Every job is different. Contact Strictly Builders Inc for an accurate estimate.

What Kitchen Painting Actually Covers

We don't quote one scope and deliver another. Here's what a full kitchen painting engagement includes.

01

Cabinet Painting

Doors and face frames are degreased, lightly sanded, primed with a bonding primer, and finished in a durable cabinet-rated enamel. We remove hardware before we start and reinstall it after the finish cures.

02

Wall Surfaces

Kitchen walls take more moisture and grease than any other room in the house. We use a washable satin or semi-gloss on the walls and a harder sheen near the range. Patching and skim-coating happen before any paint goes on.

03

Trim and Crown

Trim takes impact and needs an enamel that holds an edge. We don't use the same wall paint on trim. Different product, different finish, different application method.

04

Ceiling Work

Kitchen ceilings accumulate grease vapor. If the ceiling is in scope, we clean it first. Skipping that step and painting over a greasy ceiling is the most common reason kitchen ceiling paint fails early.

05

Backsplash Coordination

If you're also updating the backsplash, we sequence the painting around the tile work so neither trade has to redo what the other already finished.

06

Prep and Protection

Countertops, appliances, and floors are masked before we start. We don't move fast at the expense of the surfaces we aren't supposed to be touching.

Our Process

How the Process Runs

Three stages, in sequence. Shortcuts at any one of them show up in the final product.

  1. 01

    Surface Assessment and Prep

We inspect the existing finish, identify delamination or grease contamination, and determine the correct primer and topcoat for each surface type. Drywall repairs happen here. So does drywall work if the walls need patching before paint.

  2. 02

    Prime and First Coat

Cabinet-grade bonding primer goes on doors and frames. Walls get a sealer coat where needed. We don't skip primer to save time. That decision is the difference between paint that lasts two years and paint that lasts ten.

  3. 03

    Finish Coats and Cleanup

Final coats are applied with the product and method appropriate to each surface. We inspect for coverage before we consider the job done. Masking comes off after the finish coats, hardware goes back on, and we leave the space ready to use.

When to Call a Contractor Instead of DIYing It

  1. 01

Your Cabinets Have a Previous Finish

Painting over existing paint without knowing what the original finish was is a common mistake. Oil-based primer over latex fails. Latex over an uncured oil finish fails. A contractor identifies the substrate and chooses the primer accordingly.

  2. 02

You Have Laminate or Thermofoil Cabinet Faces

Standard primers don't bond to laminate. Thermofoil faces can peel away from the substrate when heated. These surfaces require specific adhesion promoters and, in some cases, shouldn't be painted at all. We'll tell you honestly if painting your cabinets is the wrong call.

  3. 03

The Project Is Part of a Larger Renovation

If you're also updating flooring or running new tile work, coordinating paint around those trades is part of the job. A single contractor managing the full scope avoids the finish conflicts that happen when multiple crews work in sequence without talking to each other.

Kitchen Painting: Frequently Asked Questions

What type of paint holds up best on kitchen cabinets?
Cabinet-grade alkyd or waterborne alkyd enamel is the industry standard for painted cabinet doors and face frames. It cures to a hard, scrubbable surface that resists chipping far better than standard wall latex. The sheen matters too. Satin and semi-gloss are both appropriate. High-gloss shows every surface imperfection, so the prep work has to be flawless if that's the direction you choose.
Do kitchen cabinets need to be sanded before painting?
Yes. Light scuff-sanding breaks the existing finish and gives the primer a mechanical tooth to grip. On glossy factory finishes, skipping this step is the most direct path to peeling within a year. The sanding doesn't need to strip the cabinet down to raw wood. It needs to dull the surface consistently so the primer bonds across the whole face.
Is painting kitchen cabinets worth it compared to replacing them?
If the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and the layout works for you, painting is a fraction of the cost of replacement. The caveat is condition. Cabinets with warped doors, damaged substrate, or delaminating thermofoil faces are poor candidates. We assess the condition before quoting so you're not investing in a paint job on a cabinet that needs to come out anyway.
What sheen should kitchen walls be painted in?
Satin or semi-gloss is appropriate for kitchen walls. Eggshell is common in other rooms but doesn't hold up to the moisture and grease that kitchens produce. The wall adjacent to the range takes the most heat and vapor and benefits most from a semi-gloss finish that can be wiped down without the paint absorbing the cleaning agent.
How long does kitchen cabinet paint take to fully cure?
Most waterborne alkyd enamels are dry to the touch within a few hours but reach full cure hardness in 14 to 30 days depending on humidity and temperature. During the cure window, the finish is vulnerable to scratching and marking. We reinstall cabinet hardware after application and advise clients on what contact to avoid while the finish hardens.
Can kitchen painting be done while the kitchen is still in use?
It depends on the scope. Wall painting with cabinet doors left on is minimally disruptive. A full cabinet painting job involves removing all doors and hardware, which takes the kitchen partially out of service during the process. We coordinate the schedule with you so the disruption is concentrated in the shortest window possible, especially if this is the primary kitchen in the home.
