Bathroom Remodel Contractors Who Finish the Job

Finding bathroom remodel contractors who handle the full scope without stitching together three separate subs is harder than it should be. Strictly Builders Inc covers the whole project: demo, drywall, tile work, waterproofing, fixtures, and paint. Ryan Alson has run these jobs personally for three years, and every bathroom remodel that leaves here goes through the same standard, substrate properly prepped, tile set level, no shortcuts on the waterproof membrane. Call for a free estimate and get a straight answer about what your project actually involves.

Bathroom remodels vary more in scope than most homeowners expect. A cosmetic refresh, new tile surround, updated vanity, fresh drywall finish, sits at a very different cost and timeline than a full gut where the subfloor needs leveling and the plumbing layout changes. What drives cost up: scope of demo, whether moisture damage is hiding behind the current tile, fixture count, tile material and format size, and whether any drywall work goes floor to ceiling or just around the wet zone. What keeps it predictable: a contractor who's done enough of these to spot the trouble before demo starts. Every job is different, contact Strictly Builders Inc for an accurate estimate.

What a Complete Bathroom Remodel Actually Covers

Most remodels touch more surfaces than the initial quote suggests. Here's what the full scope looks like.

  1. 01

    Demo and Subfloor Assessment

Tear-out comes first, tile, drywall, vanity, tub or shower unit, whatever's going. More importantly, demo reveals what the walls and floor are actually doing. Soft spots, old moisture intrusion, and out-of-level substrates all get addressed before a single new tile goes down.

  2. 02

    Waterproofing and Backer Installation

The wet zone gets cement board or a dedicated waterproof membrane system. Not standard drywall with paint over it. This is the step that separates a bathroom that holds up for fifteen years from one that's showing mold at the grout lines in four.

  3. 03

    Tile Setting and Grouting

Floor tile, tub surround, shower walls, and any accent work are set level and plumb, with consistent grout joints throughout. Large-format tiles, herringbone patterns, niche inserts. The layout gets planned before the first tile is cut, not improvised as the work progresses.

  4. 04

    Fixtures, Drywall, and Paint Finish

Vanity install, mirror, lighting rough-in support, and any remaining drywall repairs get finished before paint. The final pass covers trim, caulk lines, and cleanup. You don't get handed off to someone else for the last 20 percent of the job.

Project Types

Small Bathroom Remodels to Full Gut Renovations

01

Tub-to-Shower Conversions

Replacing a dated tub with a walk-in shower changes how the whole room feels and functions. The conversion involves reconfiguring the drain, building a proper curb or zero-entry pan, waterproofing the entire enclosure, and tiling to finish. It's one of the more involved single changes in a bathroom, do it right or the water finds a way out.

02

Tub and Surround Replacement

When the tub stays but the surround is failing, cracked grout, soft tile, water behind the wall, the tile and backer come off, moisture damage gets repaired, and the surround goes back in properly. The new tile work is linked back into the broader remodeling scope if the floor or vanity area needs attention at the same time.

03

Vanity and Layout Updates

New vanity, countertop, sink, and faucet installation with the drywall patched and painted to match. If the plumbing location is staying put, this is a cleaner scope. If you're moving the drain or adding a double sink where there wasn't one, the complexity and timeline scale accordingly.

04

Full Gut Remodels

Everything comes out: tile, flooring, fixtures, drywall, sometimes down to the studs. This is the right move when you've got ongoing moisture issues, a layout that doesn't work, or a bathroom that simply needs to start over. Honestly, trying to patch around serious substrate damage costs more long-term than doing it properly the first time.

How It Works

From First Call to Finished Bathroom

  1. 01

    Estimate and Scope

Ryan walks the job, identifies what's visible, and flags what demo might reveal. You get a scope and estimate based on the actual space, not a number pulled from a square-footage calculator.

  2. 02

    Demo and Rough Work

Tear-out, substrate prep, waterproofing, and any structural or drywall work happen first. The room gets protected and the debris goes out before tile and fixtures come in.

  3. 03

    Tile, Fixtures, and Finish

Tile setting, grouting, fixture installation, paint, and caulk are all handled by the same contractor who started the job. No relay race between subs, no gaps in accountability.

Why One Contractor for the Whole Project Matters

Bathroom remodels fall apart at the handoff points. The tile guy shows up and the backer wasn't installed correctly by the drywall sub. The vanity gets set and the paint sub won't touch the trim because it wasn't in the quote. Strictly Builders Inc doesn't work that way. One call, one contractor from demo through the final coat of paint. Ryan Alson has been doing this for three years and takes the kind of personal interest in a finished bathroom that you don't get from a crew that's been handed a partial scope. The work we do in wet zones, tile surrounds, shower floors, waterproofing membranes, has to last. Shortcuts here don't show up until six months later when water's moving behind the wall. We'd rather do it right on the first visit than come back to fix it. We also serve the St. Johns and Atlantic Beach areas for homeowners outside the immediate metro.

Bathroom Remodel Questions

How long does a full bathroom gut and remodel typically take?
A full gut-to-finish remodel, demo, backer, tile, fixtures, paint, generally runs two to three weeks for a standard-size bathroom, assuming materials are on-site when work starts and no major structural surprises come out of demo. Cosmetic remodels that skip demo run faster. Mud-set shower floors and large-format tile that needs more dry time add days. We'll give you a realistic timeline in the estimate, not a number designed to get you to sign.
What type of tile backer should be used in a wet shower or tub area?
Cement board or a dedicated waterproof membrane, not standard gypsum drywall, even moisture-resistant varieties. In a direct wet zone (shower walls, tub surround), moisture eventually wins against anything that isn't built to handle it. We use cement board or RedGard-style membrane systems depending on the specific application. Skipping this step is the most common reason bathrooms fail years after a remodel.
My bathroom tile is cracking. Does that mean there's a problem with the substrate underneath?
Often, yes. Cracked tile in a shower or floor usually points to substrate movement, a loose or improperly prepared surface, or deflection in the subfloor, not just a tile quality issue. We assess the subfloor condition and tile substrate before any new tile goes in, because tiling over a soft or moving surface just means the new tile cracks on the same schedule. Demo will tell the real story.
Can a tub-to-shower conversion be done without moving the existing drain?
Sometimes, but it depends on drain placement relative to the new shower footprint and the type of drain configuration you're using. A linear drain gives more placement flexibility than a traditional center drain. If the existing tub drain lines up reasonably with the shower layout, the conversion is cleaner and faster. If the drain needs to move, that's a more involved scope, but we handle the full remodeling work in-house, so it doesn't require a separate plumber coordination.
What causes grout to crack or discolor so quickly after a bathroom remodel?
The most common causes are movement in the substrate the tile was set on, grout lines that are too wide for the unsanded grout used, inadequate cure time before the shower was put into use, or using the wrong grout type for the application. Epoxy grout holds up better in wet areas but requires more skill to work with. Standard sanded grout in the wrong joint width or on a moving substrate will fail regardless of brand. This is why substrate prep matters more than most homeowners realize.
