Interior Painting Built on Proper Preparation

Most interior painting complaints come down to one thing: bad prep. Walls that weren't cleaned, patched, or primed before paint was rolled on. The finish looks fine for six months, then the edges lift, the patches show through, and the sheen turns uneven in the light. At Strictly Builders Inc, Ryan Alson has been handling interior painting as part of full renovation scopes for three years, and the prep process doesn't get cut short to hit a faster timeline. If you're pricing out an interior paint job and want to understand exactly what's involved before committing, call for a free estimate.

What drives cost on an interior paint job is surface condition first, then scope. A room with hairline cracks, old texture, or water-stained ceilings takes longer to prepare than a clean, smooth wall. The number of colors, the ceiling height, whether trim and cabinetry are included, and the finish level you select all shift the final figure. We handle everything from accent walls to full-home repaints, including kitchen painting where cabinet fronts and backsplash areas require a different prep approach than open walls. Every job is different -- contact Strictly Builders Inc for an accurate estimate.

What Our Painting Process Covers

  1. 01

    Surface Assessment and Repair

We inspect walls for cracks, nail pops, water damage, and failing texture before any paint opens. Drywall repairs and skim coating happen first. Paint laid over a bad surface is money wasted.

  2. 02

    Cleaning and Priming

Walls are cleaned and primed before any topcoat is applied. On surfaces with staining, glossy finishes, or significant color shifts, a dedicated primer coat isn't optional -- it's what makes the topcoat perform.

  3. 03

    Masking and Protection

Trim, floors, fixtures, and cabinetry are masked before we start. We don't rely on a steady hand alone. Clean tape lines at trim edges and ceiling cuts are the mark of a paint job done at a professional standard.

  4. 04

    Finish Coat Application

Topcoats are rolled and cut in section by section. Lap marks, roller texture, and holidays in coverage are caught and corrected before we call a coat finished. Two coats is standard; some substrates require a third.

SCOPE

Rooms and Surfaces We Paint

01

Living and Dining Rooms

Full wall-to-wall coverage including ceilings, trim, and accent walls. We work around furniture when necessary or coordinate staging with the homeowner before we start.

02

Kitchens

Kitchens require tighter masking around appliances, cabinet boxes, and countertop edges. We coordinate interior painting with kitchen painting on cabinet fronts when both are in scope at the same time.

03

Bedrooms and Hallways

High-traffic corridors and bedroom walls take more abuse than most surfaces. We use appropriate sheen levels for each space -- eggshell in bedrooms, satin in hallways, semi-gloss near moisture.

04

Trim, Doors, and Casings

Trim painting is its own process: light sanding between coats, careful brush application, and clean lines at the wall edge. Paired with trim work installation when new profiles are going in.

05

Ceilings

Ceiling paint is flat-finish and requires even coverage to avoid roller marks that catch raking light. Water stains get sealed with shellac-based primer before they're painted over -- not just covered and hoped for.

06

New Construction Interiors

Fresh drywall requires a different primer than a previously painted wall. We handle new-build interiors where everything from the first prime coat to the final trim line is part of the scope from day one.

MATERIALS

Paint Selection and Finish Levels

The product you apply matters. So does where you apply it.

Flat paint belongs on ceilings, not walls in a kitchen. Semi-gloss belongs on trim and moisture-exposed surfaces, not on bedroom walls where every imperfection reflects under light. Part of our job is advising on sheen levels before the first gallon gets opened. For color decisions, we can work from a client's existing selections or advise based on lighting conditions in the space. We don't push a single brand -- product selection depends on the substrate, the finish requirement, and how long the surface needs to hold up. Bathrooms and kitchens see humidity; the paint in those rooms needs to handle it. Hallways see friction; eggshell won't last there as long as satin will. These aren't details most painters mention upfront. They should.

Painting Alongside Other Renovation Work

Interior painting rarely happens in a vacuum on a renovation project. New cabinetry goes in, then trim painting follows. Tile flooring gets laid, then baseboard paint needs touching up around the new installation. Drywall repairs get patched after rough-in work, then the repaired section needs to match the surrounding wall -- which means the whole wall usually gets repainted for a clean result. Strictly Builders handles interior painting as part of full renovation scopes, which means we're not coordinating around another contractor's schedule. The paint phase fits into the project timeline without a gap while you wait for a separate crew to show up. For homeowners in areas like Ponte Vedra Beach or Saint Johns running full interior renovation projects, that continuity matters.

Interior Painting -- Common Questions

How many coats of paint does a typical interior wall need?
Most walls require two finish coats over primer. The exception is when you're making a dramatic color shift -- dark to white or vice versa -- where a third coat is often necessary to eliminate bleed-through. Skipping primer and applying three topcoats instead is not a substitute. Primer seals the substrate and gives topcoat something to bond to; topcoat is not formulated for that job.
What sheen level should I use in different rooms?
Flat or matte works on ceilings. Eggshell is the standard for low-traffic bedroom and living room walls. Satin holds up better in hallways, kids' rooms, and anywhere that gets wiped down regularly. Semi-gloss belongs on trim, doors, and cabinetry. Gloss is reserved for specific accent surfaces. Using the wrong sheen doesn't just look off -- it affects how well the surface cleans and how long the finish lasts.
How long does interior paint need to dry before the room is usable?
Latex paints are typically dry to the touch within an hour, but cure time is different from dry time. Full hardness -- where the surface resists scuffing and can be wiped -- takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on product, humidity, and airflow. Furniture pushed against a freshly painted wall during that window can lift the finish. We advise on timing per project so clients know what to expect.
Do walls need to be patched before painting, or can paint hide minor damage?
Paint does not hide damage. It illuminates it. A patched nail hole that isn't skim-coated and feathered properly will telegraph through any number of topcoats once light hits the wall at an angle. Textured surfaces with inconsistent coverage show every unfilled divot. We repair before we prime. That step adds time, and it's the step most budget painters skip.
Can interior painting be coordinated with flooring or tile installation in the same project?
It can, and it should be sequenced correctly. Painting typically happens before new luxury vinyl or LVT flooring is installed so that baseboard and trim edges can be cut in cleanly without working around finished floors. If the sequence runs the other way, masking at the floor line becomes more involved. We coordinate the sequence on combined projects so each trade's work is protected.
What's the difference between paint for new drywall versus previously painted walls?
New drywall is porous and will absorb a standard topcoat unevenly, leaving a flashing or blotchy appearance called 'picture framing' around each board. A PVA drywall primer seals the surface first so topcoat absorbs uniformly. Previously painted walls in good condition can typically take a bonding primer or light sanding before topcoat. Skipping the right primer on new drywall is one of the most common mistakes on new-build interiors.
