Converting a Bedroom Into a Bathroom or Livable Space

Converting a bedroom into a bathroom is one of the most searched room addition projects homeowners tackle, and it's also one of the most technically demanding. You're not just moving walls. You're rerouting plumbing, adding electrical circuits, framing new partitions, tiling wet areas, and making sure the structure can handle everything that comes with a functioning bathroom. Done wrong, it creates moisture problems that eat through drywall and subfloor within a few years. Done right, it adds a full bathroom where your home had a gap. Strictly Builders Inc handles this scope from demolition through finish, with Ryan Alson overseeing the work personally across every project we take on. Call for a free estimate before you start pulling permits.

Room additions aren't all the same size or scope. A bedroom conversion might take a few weeks. A full structural addition, where we're expanding the footprint of the home, adding a foundation section, framing new exterior walls, and tying into existing rooflines, is a multi-month project with a very different cost profile. What drives cost up: plumbing relocation, load-bearing wall removal, permit requirements, finish level, and whether the existing structure needs any repair before we can tie into it. We've worked on both quick interior reconfigurations and larger new builds that added hundreds of square feet to a home's footprint. Every job is different, so contact Strictly Builders Inc for an accurate estimate rather than guessing from a range you found online.

Room Addition Scope We Handle

One contractor for structure, finishes, plumbing coordination, and everything between framing and final walkthrough.

01

Bedroom to Bathroom Conversion

We frame new wet walls, run drain and supply rough-in, install backer board, and complete the full tile shower installation and fixture set. The result is a functional bathroom where a bedroom used to be, with no trace of the conversion in the finish work.

02

Structural Room Additions

Expanding the home's footprint means foundation work, exterior framing, roof tie-ins, and weather envelope integrity before any interior work begins. We manage the sequence so you're not living with a half-open structure longer than necessary.

03

Interior Space Reconfiguration

Not every addition requires breaking ground. Sometimes a wall comes down, a closet gets absorbed, and what was dead square footage becomes a room with a purpose. We handle load-bearing assessments and full drywall finish on every reconfiguration project.

04

Flooring in New Spaces

Every addition needs a finished floor that matches or complements the rest of the home. We install flooring across hardwood, LVP, tile, and epoxy, and we repair or level the subfloor first if the structure requires it.

05

Cabinets and Built-Ins

A laundry addition, bathroom conversion, or expanded kitchen benefits from purpose-built storage. We handle cabinets installation as part of the broader project so you're not coordinating a second contractor after we leave.

06

Kitchen Additions and Expansions

Some homeowners need more kitchen than a remodel can deliver. When the layout is genuinely the constraint, a structural addition is the answer. That work connects directly to our kitchen remodels scope for a single-contractor finish.

How a Room Addition Actually Gets Built

There's a sequence to this work. Skipping steps is how additions fail inspection or show problems two years later.

  1. 01

    Assessment and Permit Planning

We evaluate the existing structure, confirm load-bearing conditions, and map the permit requirements for your specific addition type. Permit scope varies by county and by project, and we don't start framing before it's resolved.

  2. 02

    Rough-In and Structural Work

Framing, plumbing rough-in, electrical rough-in, and any foundation or exterior envelope work happen in this phase. Inspections occur here before anything gets covered. This is where the project either gets built correctly or doesn't.

  3. 03

    Finish and Final Walkthrough

Drywall, flooring, tile, cabinets, fixtures, and paint all follow after inspections pass. We finish the space fully, not to a punch-list level where you're chasing us for the last 10 percent. Ryan walks every finished addition before we call it done.

Room Addition Questions With Straight Answers

What does converting a bedroom into a bathroom actually involve structurally?
At minimum, you need new plumbing drain lines run to the existing stack, supply lines extended to the new wet wall, electrical circuits added for GFCI outlets and ventilation, backer board in all wet areas, and a finished tile installation. If the bedroom sits over a slab, cutting the slab for drain rough-in is part of the job. It's real structural and mechanical work, not just cosmetic, which is why it needs a licensed contractor managing the sequence.
Do I need a permit to add a room or convert a bedroom to a bathroom in Florida?
Yes. Any project that adds square footage, relocates plumbing, adds electrical circuits, or touches the structural envelope in Florida requires permits and inspections. Skipping permits creates title problems when you sell the home and voids any warranty on the work. We don't do unpermitted structural work. If a contractor tells you a permit isn't necessary for a full bathroom conversion, that's a red flag.
How long does a bedroom-to-bathroom conversion take from start to finish?
A straightforward interior conversion in a two-story home, where plumbing can tie into a nearby stack without major slab work, typically runs three to five weeks including permit processing. Slab-on-grade homes where we're cutting concrete for drain lines take longer. Full structural additions that expand the home's footprint are multi-month projects. Timeline depends heavily on permit processing speed in your county, which is outside our control once submitted.
Can you handle the flooring and tile in the new space, or is that a separate contractor?
We handle it in-house. Flooring demolition and removal, subfloor leveling or repair, and the full finish install, whether that's tile, LVP, or hardwood, are all part of our scope. Bringing in a separate flooring crew after a structural addition is done is an unnecessary coordination problem. One contractor finishes the whole project.
What's the most common mistake homeowners make when planning a room addition?
Underestimating how much the existing structure affects the new addition's cost and timeline. Older homes in particular often have framing or subfloor conditions that need correction before new work can tie into them cleanly. We find this during our assessment, not after we've started framing. If you've had another contractor quote the job without walking the existing structure thoroughly, that quote is probably missing something. Homes in areas like Ponte Vedra Beach and Green Cove Springs frequently have conditions that change the scope once walls open up.
Does a room addition increase my home's resale value?
A bathroom addition consistently returns strong value at resale, particularly in homes that are under-bathed for their bedroom count. A three-bedroom home with one bathroom is a hard sell compared to one with two. The actual return depends on finish level, how well the addition matches the home's existing architecture, and the market conditions at the time you sell. We build additions to the same standard regardless, because a poorly integrated addition is visible to any inspector.
