Laminate Floor Installation That Starts Below the Surface

The most common laminate floor installation mistake isn't the flooring itself. It's what happens before the first plank goes down. Skipping proper acclimation, ignoring a soft subfloor, or rushing expansion gaps will cost you buckled planks and separating seams inside of a year. Strictly Builders Inc handles every step: subfloor assessment, moisture checks, layout planning, and installation with the expansion tolerances the manufacturer actually requires. If the substrate isn't right, we say so before we start, not after. Call for a free estimate and let's look at what you're working with.

Laminate floor installation varies by job. Square footage is the obvious factor, but room shape, transitions between spaces, stair nosing, existing floor height at doorways, and subfloor condition all move the number. A straightforward rectangular room is fast. A room full of angles, alcoves, or a compromised subfloor that needs leveling first is a different scope entirely. If you're considering tile flooring installation in wet areas and laminate in the rest of the house, the transitions between those surfaces matter and we plan for them from the start. Every job is different, contact Strictly Builders Inc for an accurate estimate.

What Goes Wrong When Installation Is Rushed

Most laminate failures trace back to the same handful of skipped steps.

01

No Acclimation Time

Laminate needs to sit in the room where it's being installed, 24 to 48 hours minimum, sometimes longer in Florida's humidity. Install cold planks into a warm room and they'll expand unevenly. Gaps show up in winter. Buckling shows up in summer.

02

Ignored Subfloor Issues

A subfloor with dips, soft spots, or height variation over an eighth of an inch is a problem. Laminate floated over a bad substrate telegraphs every flaw underfoot. We assess and address it before anything goes down.

03

Wrong Expansion Gap

Every manufacturer specifies a gap at the wall perimeter. Cut it too tight and the floor has nowhere to move seasonally. The result is planks pushing against each other and lifting in the middle of the room, a fix that means pulling it all up.

04

Bad Transitions

Where laminate meets tile, hardwood, or carpet, the transition strip has to be right in height and type. A mismatched or missing transition is a trip hazard and looks unfinished. We spec the correct piece for each threshold.

Our Process

How Strictly Builders Handles a Laminate Install

  1. 01

    Assess and Prep

We check the subfloor for level, moisture, and structural integrity. Existing flooring that needs to come up first gets handled. See our flooring demolition and removal work. Nothing goes down over a problem.

  2. 02

    Acclimate and Plan Layout

Planks acclimate to the room's conditions. We plan the layout from the most visible sight line, accounting for doorways, closets, and transitions. The first row sets the angle for every row after it.

  3. 03

    Install and Finish

Installation is floating with the correct underlayment, proper gaps, and clean cuts at every wall and obstacle. Transitions, trim work, and door casings get undercut so the floor slides under cleanly instead of butting awkwardly against them.

Scope

Full Project or Part of a Bigger Renovation

Laminate installation is often one piece of a larger project. Strictly Builders handles the full scope under one contractor, no coordinating between a flooring company and a separate trim carpenter or painter. Ryan Alson has been in the trade three years running projects that combine flooring with cabinet installation, kitchen painting, and electrical work for appliances. We don't hand off the job mid-project. That means one point of contact, one schedule, and no finger-pointing when something needs to be resolved. If you're renovating a room or a full floor of the house, we'll scope the whole thing. Areas we work across Northeast Florida include Ponte Vedra, Fleming Island, and Saint Johns. Schedule any day, Monday through Sunday.

What This Business Won't Do

A few things Strictly Builders Inc won't do on a laminate job, worth knowing before you call anyone.

Won't install over a subfloor that isn't ready
If the substrate has soft spots or height variation, we fix it first or tell you exactly what needs to happen.
Won't skip manufacturer acclimation requirements
The warranty on most laminate products depends on proper acclimation. We follow it.
Won't hand off the job to a subcontractor
The person who scopes the work is the person who does it. No subcontracting maze.
Won't quote a price before seeing the subfloor condition
What's under the existing floor changes the scope. We assess first, then give you an accurate number.

Common Questions About Laminate Installation

How long does laminate flooring need to acclimate before installation?
In Florida's climate, plan for at least 48 hours in the room where it's being installed, with the HVAC running at normal conditions. High humidity or a room that's been closed up for a while may require longer. Rushing acclimation is the most common reason laminate floors expand unevenly after install, gaps in winter, buckling in summer.
What are the most common installation mistakes with laminate flooring?
The big ones: not acclimating the planks, not checking and leveling the subfloor, cutting expansion gaps too tight at walls, and using the wrong underlayment for the subfloor type. Any one of these alone can cause failure. Mismatched transitions at doorways are also common when a contractor rushes or doesn't plan the layout across multiple floor types.
Does laminate flooring work over concrete slab foundations?
Yes, but moisture is the controlling factor. Concrete slabs in Florida pull ambient moisture, so a vapor barrier or moisture-rated underlayment is mandatory, not optional. We check moisture levels before any laminate goes down over slab. If readings are above manufacturer tolerance, the slab needs to be addressed first, otherwise the flooring warranty is void from day one.
How is laminate different from LVP for installation purposes?
Both are floating floor systems, but LVP tolerates moisture better and is fully waterproof, making it the right call for bathrooms and laundry rooms. Laminate is wood-core and will swell with sustained moisture exposure. For dry living areas, laminate is a solid option. For anywhere with splash or spill risk, we'll steer you toward LVP or tile flooring instead.
What happens at stairs when laminate meets a staircase?
Stairs require stair nosing pieces, the curved edge profile that wraps each tread. These need to match or coordinate with the laminate and be secured properly, not just glued and hoped for. Strictly Builders handles stair installation and refinishing as part of a flooring project, so the transition from a laminate floor to a staircase is planned from the start, not figured out at the last step.
